Parent-Teacher Conferences

The science department conducts student-led conferences during parent-teacher conference times. The following is an informational letter that you can expect to receive before the conference dates:

Dear Parents/Guardians of TPJHS Science Students:

The science department will be facilitating student-led conferences on Parent/Teacher Conference Day(s) (the date will be noted in the letter mailed to you). Since your child will be leading the conference, it is critical that he or she attends the conference with you and brings the required materials listed in the “what to bring” description below.

What is this type of conference?:  This student-run conference provides an opportunity for your child to learn organizational skills, communication skills, time management, social skills, individual responsibility, and accountability. The conferences should run about 15-25 minutes in length.

What to bring: Please make sure your child brings the following with them to the conference: Notebooks, journals, 3-ring binder; student planner; any science work not kept in the classroom or turned-in.

What to expect: Your child will be running the conference. Your child will use checklists to guide him/her through the conference (this will be explained to the students before conference day). During the conference, your child will explain class procedures, show you their organization, and perform specific tasks. You will assist your child in completing a survey form, and you will complete an evaluation of the conference. The teacher will be available for specific questions as well. In addition, you may request to schedule a private, traditional conference if the student-led conference did not satisfy all your questions and concerns.

When to schedule: You do not need to schedule a specific conference time. You may show up anytime during the conference block times (these times will be noted on the letter sent home). In the event the room is full there may be a slight wait time.

This is an opportunity for your child to take ownership over his/her education. It is also an opportunity for you, as a parent, to show a positive interest in your child’s progress, accept your child’s evaluation of his/her own accomplishments, and provide your child with support and encouragement for his/her schoolwork. Your child’s teacher will be in the room should any clarification become necessary. Expect to see another conference invitation, from your child, a few days before the conference.
